Damaging winds and rain means local vegetable production is difficult and expensive in the Central Philippines (Visayas) when typhoons are active and results in the Visayas producing only 40% of their vegetable requirements. Importing vegetables from other regions is expensive because of high inter-island transport costs and poor road transport.
A joint Australian/Philippines project aimed at developing and evaluating low-cost protected cropping systems could lead to higher farm incomes by allowing farmers to produce vegetable crops during the wet season.
